When you see foam on the K-cup holder, sponge it off to prevent it from ending up in your drink tomorrow morning. If you’re still having trouble brewing, there may also be coffee grounds stuck to the needles that puncture the entry and exit points where the water flows through the K-cups.

In this guide we will cover cleaning and descaling in depth. This will help keep your Keurig running smoothly and ensure it is free of mineral build-up so it runs smoothly day after day.

There are three main steps to cleaning any Keurig model, including removable parts, interior parts, and descaling. You probably already have the necessary equipment, so let’s get started!

If your machine isn’t working well despite cleaning, our Keurig troubleshooting guide can help you diagnose and fix common problems.

Descaling beer is a process that removes mineral build-up, usually lime. You’ve probably seen it before: a hard, white substance that often builds up in coffee machines.

Tap water that contains high levels of minerals is known as “hard water”. If your domestic water supply is hard water, mineral build-up can occur quite quickly.

Over time, this buildup can clog lines or break into small pieces. This is often the reason why the water tank and feed line do not work properly in a Keurig brewer.

You do not need to clean your Keurig before descaling. It’s probably a good idea though – it will help the descaling process and remove as much build-up as possible throughout the machine.

With this machine, you must use the Keurig maintenance accessory to perform a clean brew. If you did not receive one with your Keurig 2.0, you will need to purchase one separately or contact Keurig to see if they will send you one.

Easy Steps To Descale A Keurig 2.0

You can buy liquid descaling solutions for coffee machines. The main ingredient is usually citric acid, while white vinegar is about 3% acetic acid and 97% water.

There are a number of different descaling solutions on the market. Keurig descaling solution is highly recommended, but some other brands can be quite harsh compared to vinegar and destroy the inner workings of your coffee maker.

If you plan to use a descaling solution, check the box for detailed instructions. Make sure any commercial descaling solution you buy is safe for use in Keurig machines. The descaling process should be the same, but you would use the solution instead of vinegar.

Although we recommend using regular white vinegar, you may be interested in using the descaling solution from Keurig.

If you don’t think the vinegar treatment works for you, you can try it. Who knows, it might fix a stubbornly clogged Keurig.

Use a paper clip to gently push into the holes that pierce the K-Cup. These holes are easily clogged with coffee particles and mineral build-up. You may need to move the paper clip slightly inside the holes. If a paper clip won’t fit, look for something a little thinner.

Note: The water line can become clogged at this point during the descaling process, so it is important to be aware of this. If this happens, simply move the paper clip in, reassemble the machine and finish the descaling process.

Don’t worry about breaking anything inside the holes, they are simply water lines with no workpieces inside.

You can also try turning the Keurig machine upside down and giving it a “soft tap” on the bottom to help dislodge anything that might be stuck inside.

Find the water line nozzle and attach the suction tube to it. You may need to use your fingers to make a seal.

Blow air through the suction tube to help remove debris in the water line. You will have to blow really hard. If you don’t have the ability to do this, don’t worry about this step – it’s not the most important stage and you can move on to step 4.

Use a microfiber cloth and an all-purpose cleaner to clean the outside of the machine. We recommend spraying the cleaner on the cloth instead of directly on the Keurig. This will help prevent the cleaner from getting into unwanted areas.

Alternatively, you can use soapy water to clean and rinse with a damp cloth. Some areas may need a little elbow grease to remove stubborn dirt. Take the time and work to get things as flawless as possible.

Remove the water tank and empty it. Remove the water filter if your Keurig has one. Turn the faucet to full flow and let the water run over the mesh filter inside. This will help remove any dirt.

White scaling may occur, especially around the tank area. This can be cleaned with white vinegar. We recommend using a paper towel moistened with vinegar to clean the area.

You may need to soak the area and let the vinegar soak for a minute before wiping it off with a damp cloth and water. Again, it may take some elbow grease until it all goes away.

Most of these items are dishwasher safe, but we recommend placing the items (not the entire machine) in a sink full of warm, soapy water and soaking for 10-15 minutes before rinsing and towel drying.

Dishwashers can be hard on plastic items. We get many complaints that the plastic in the water containers is unclear or crooked. The culprits are always dishwashers and hot water.

Do not let the water sit in your tank for more than a few days. Mineral deposits will build up as the water evaporates and you will need to spend more time cleaning and descaling the next time you want to use it.

Depending on a number of factors, mold can also start to grow inside your coffee maker, which can make you sick. We wrote about this in our article Mold in the coffee machine.

Some people claim that using filtered water removes some of the subtle flavors they enjoy in their coffee, but that’s a matter of personal taste.

We recommend using a simple water filtration pitcher, such as the Brita 10-cup flow filter, if your Keurig model does not have one, to help remove unwanted chemicals and flavors from your water. This will give you a better tasting coffee.
